Born and raised in Carson City, Nevada, Phil is one of 10 children. “We were extremely poor,” he remembers. “We didn’t have much at all, except a work ethic.” Phil loved to work. He had his first job at age 8, and a full-time job at 10. “Whether it was mowing lawns, shoveling snow, or delivering newspapers – whatever – I would do anything just so I could make money.” In 1997, he started working for a local glass shop. 13 years later, he opened a small shop out of his garage called PR Door and Glass. “That’s what I did before the barbecue took over.”

Phil Hyatt- Owner, Chief Cook & Bottle Washer

A native Nevadan, Michele and Phil grew up together in Carson City, dating in high school. As most romances go, one must leave before they can come back to what they wanted most – would that be the taste of BBQ?  In the early 1980’s, Michele moved to the Bay Area to get a degree in radiology and pursue a career as an MRI technologist. After years of traveling the country in the health field, she moved back to Carson and she and Phil began dating once again. She would help with Carson City BBQ on her days off, but that soon grew into a full-time job. She now works both behind the scenes managing various aspects of the business, as well as helping with catering events, working with customers and number one – keeping Phil in line!

Michele Wilkinson- Head Wrangler

Just after arriving in Northern Nevada, I met Phil Hyatt. He needed some help and I was looking for work. I never expected to fall in love with Carson City BBQ or the town itself. I’ve always loved cooking and after my time in the Army including overseas, I discovered that cooking really helped me relax and cope with the stress of those experiences. Now I can’t think of anything else I would rather do. Carson City BBQ is more of a family to me than a job. Cooking barbecue is a labor of love and I enjoy every moment of it.
