BBQ Catering in Douglas Countyand the Carson Valley
That distinction does real work. The county's western edge is up on the Nevada shore of Lake Tahoe, roughly 1,400 feet above the valley; its southern end runs down Highway 395 toward Topaz. - Nevada's first county, established in 1861. Minden is the county seat; the county runs from the Carson Valley floor up to the Nevada shore of Lake Tahoe.
What the valley puts on the calendar
This is ranch country, and was before Nevada was a state: Genoa, at the foot of the Sierra, is older than the county it sits in. Hay meadows, cattle and long-held family ground still set the rhythm, and the events that follow from that are outdoor and communal — reunions, anniversaries, graduations, fundraisers and receptions held on somebody's own land rather than in a rented room.
The other half of the calendar is institutional. The seat carries the courthouse, the county offices and the organizations that work alongside them, which generate weekday catering on a counted headcount; the lake end is resort ground at a wholly different elevation and generates something else again. One county, three or four quite separate kinds of booking.
Four parts of one county
The county is much larger than the stretch of valley floor most people mean by its name, and its four parts ask for quite different planning.
- The valley floor
- Minden, Gardnerville and the ranch ground around them — level, open, and the closest part of the county to us. The two town pages go into detail that this page deliberately does not.
- Genoa and the west side
- Nevada's oldest settlement and the ranches along the foot of the Sierra. Small private sites, where parking, power and a level patch for the serving line are worth settling before anything else is booked.
- The lake shore
- The western end sits roughly 1,400 feet above the valley and comes with its own access and permitting questions. Planning a cook and a crew for that is a different day's work from a booking on the floor.
- The south end
- Highway 395 keeps going south past Gardnerville toward Topaz, and the county goes with it. An address down there is a materially longer run than the distance quoted at the top of this page.
Which page you actually want
If the event is in Minden or Gardnerville, read those pages rather than this one. The two towns are under two miles apart and still want different things from a caterer, and each page sets out what its own town generates and which service tier tends to suit it.
This page is for everybody else under the same county government: the ranch addresses, the small communities, and anybody whose location is a set of directions rather than a street in town. What we need in order to quote is the same in all three cases — where, when, and roughly how many.
One county, several different quotes
About 12 miles south is the figure for the seat, and nothing else here is bound by it. A north-valley address is a short run for us; one at the far south end toward Topaz is a good deal longer; one on the lake shore climbs out of the valley altogether. Our printed terms add a travel fee to caters outside our immediate area, so where in this county you are is genuinely part of the quote.
The valley floor itself is level, open and straightforward to work: room for a twenty-foot trailer, space for tents, and an afternoon wind off the Sierra front that is worth planning a serving line around. What a site has to supply is access and room — no venue kitchen enters into it at any point, because the cooker rides down with the crew and the cooking finishes on your ground.
Which service fits depends where in the county you are
There is no single answer for an area this shape. On the valley floor the published 20-person drop-off minimum is genuinely practical — though note that our terms add a travel fee to drop-offs as a matter of course, not only to the long ones. Further out, or above the valley, a drop-off means finished food riding a long way before it reaches a table.
At 40 people and up, the full cater is the reason to call this outfit rather than another one: the rotisserie comes with the crew and the food finishes in front of your guests. Give us the address rather than the town and we will tell you which tier we would actually recommend for it.
